Ipad Control for Audio-Visual Systems by Chris Wood
Recently, there have been many advances in audio-visual control systems and applications available for, or running on, the Apple iOS platform.
We have produced a summary of the systems and devices available to aid in your decision making.
Apple’s iPad is revolutionising audio-visual and home automation control. Never before has a 10″ full-colour touchscreen been so affordable. Many systems allow us to produce beautiful, customiseable graphical interfaces, and album art and track/movie information can be displayed.
AMX TPControl
TPControl is AMX’s official control app for iPad and iPhone. The interface is completely customiseable and has all the benefits of a full AMX touch panel, such as two-way communication allowing display of song lists, album art, etc from media servers and docked iPods.
Control4 MyHome
Control4 offer the MyHome application for control of their systems using the iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch. A common interface is presented, offering the same user-friendly experience found on Control4’s on-screen displays and touch panels.
ControlFX
ControlFX offer a distributed control solution running solely on the iPad, iPhone or iTouch. WiFi is used to send infra-red or RS232 serial commands to dedicated interface modules. A large number of pre-written drivers are available.
Crestron Mobile Pro G
The Mobile Pro G application is used to control Crestron hardware by iPhone or iPad. It is available at approximately $60(USD) via the iTunes store. The interface is completely customise-able.
Crestron iPanel
The Crestron iPanel is a unique and innovative product, adding real, hard buttons to the iPad, making it much more user-friendly for control applications. It partners with the Mobile Pro G application and includes an attractive charging dock.
Crestron iDoc Desktop
The Crestron iDOC-PAD-DSC is a sturdily engineered desk top dock for the iPad.
Crestron iDoc In-Wall
One of a small number of in-wall iPad docks / mounts, the IDOC-PAD-DSWC stands alone in allowing the iPad to be easily removed for hand-held use.
iRoom iDock
The iRoom iDock is a premium wall mount dock for the iPad. Installation of the bracket/fascia units is simple and it features motorised loading/unloading of the iPad. The unit blends into most types of decor since it is available in a range of finishes.
Sonance iPort Control Mount CM-IW2000 iPad Wall Mount
Sonance (by QED)’s iPort CM-2000 is designed as permanent wall-mount solution. The finish when on the wall is certainly seamless!
RTI iPanel
RTI’s iPanel software is due to be released for the iPad in April 2011. A completely customiseable interface is offered and it will work with RTI’s XP8 and soon-to-be-released XP3 and XP6 processors. 2-way control is possible with appropriate source equipment – i.e. displaying iPod playlists, cover art, etc.
